Transgenic Crops: The Next Generation, or an Example of 2020 Vision
نویسنده
چکیده
Genetically modified, i.e. transgenic crops, are now being grown on several million acres throughout the world, mainly in North America. Most of these ‘first generation’ products have specific agronomic traits designed to improve the efficiency of production. For example herbicide tolerant soybean and insect resistant corn are the two most widely grown transgenic crops. Increasingly, the new transgenic varieties under test contain product quality or other higher value traits intended to provide specific benefits to the end user whether it be the producer of specialist chemicals or the consumer. This review describes examples of these ‘second generation’ traits and attempts to predict the range of household, medical, industrial and environmental products that might become available over the next 20 years. # 1999 Annals of Botany Company

Selectable Marker Gene Removal and Expression of Transgene by Inducible Promoter Containing FFDD Cis-Acting elements in Transgenic plants
Abstract Background: Selectable marker gene (SMG) systems are critical for generation of transgenic crops. Transgenic crop production Background: Selectable marker gene (SMG) systems are critical for generation of transgenic crops. Transgenic crop production without using SMG is not economically feasible. However, SMGs are non-essential once an intact transgenic plant has been established. Eli...
متن کاملEvaluation of MYB93 and MAD8 Genes in Transgenic and Non-Transgenic Rice
Increasing drought tolerance, especially in rice, which is one of the most important crops in Asia, is necessary. Transcription factors are specific sequence DNA-binding proteins that are capable of activating or suppressing transcription. These proteins regulate gene expression levels by binding to cis regulatory elements in the promoter of target genes to control various biological processes ...
متن کاملProduction of Marker-free Transgenic Rice (Oryza sativa L.) with Improved Nutritive Quality Expressing AmA1
Background: Rice seed proteins are lacking essential amino acids (EAAs). Genetic engineering off ers a fast and sustainable method to solve this problem as it allows the specifi c expression of heterologous EAA-rich proteins. The use of selectable marker gene is essential for generation of transgenic crops, but might also lead to potential environmental and food safety problems...
متن کاملA 2020 vision for educating the next generation of public health leaders.
To meet the dynamic and evolving challenges of public health in the 21st century, our society should foster the next generation of public health leaders. We offer a vision for doing so, by introducing prevention literacy and education from the earliest possible starting point and then broadening these concepts throughout the educational ladder. Making this societal commitment now to nurture suc...
متن کاملIntegrated farming: why organic farmers should use transgenic crops.
The concept of organic farming is summarised and compared as an example to farming with biotechnology-derived crops. If done within an ecological concept, both methods can be seen as environmentally acceptable. Organic farming does not offer consistent arguments for the rejection of transgenic crops. Some arguments (from genomics to biodiversity) are discussed in order to demonstrate that the c...
